Community Workshop – Strategy
As part of our work to ensure our community members and leaders are actively involved in the implementation of the health strategy, a community workshop was delivered at Hosanna Logan City in September 2021. The workshop had two components firstly looking at general strategy planning and capability building and the second half of the session diving a little deeper into the Pasifika and Maori Health Strategy to understand important actions and priorities from a community lens. Working with Pasifika Peoples Course for Executives
In November 2021, A Working with Pasifika People’s workshop was delivered by MANA Pasifika for the Executives of Brisbane South PHN, CHQ (Children’s Health Qld) and MSH (Metro South Health). The session created a lot of authentic discussions around understanding Pasifika and Maori worldviews, embedding Pasifika and Maori frameworks into service planning, social determinants of health, and the Health Strategy. There was good participation across the 3 organisations and a lot of positive feedback. It was felt that there was strong commitment from the Executives to be responsive to the community and we continue to look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead to continue the conversation

Pasifika COVID outreach
As part of a response to ensure Pasifika and Maori communities had access to quality information and COVID-19 vaccines, Metro South Health set up outreach COVID-19 vaccination hubs to a range of Pasifika churches and community groups in tandem with the Oceania Pacific Health Association (OPHA) providing COVID-19 vaccine education and cultural support at these events. The successful outreach model delivered multiple education and targeted information sessions across the region and helped over 500 people get to vaccinated across the months of Oct- Dec 2021.

Village Connect establishes cross-sector partnerships
Village connect have established many cross-sector partnerships to support with the delivery of place-based services within Maternity Hub. Some of the news partnerships established include working with HeadStart Queensland who are delivering allied health services for children attending the hub and working with Children’s Health QLD who are providing access to child health nurses to support the health and wellbeing of Pasifika Children.

Supporting Pasifika Communities with COVID
Integral Structures in collaboration with Pasifika TV and Radio and local community members have developed some culturally adapted videos and flyers to support our Pasifika communities to get their COVID-19 vaccinations. Healthy Mouth Day
Village Connect in collaboration with Metro South Health - Oral Health Unit delivered a successful healthy mouth day in November 2021 to educate and provide resources for our families on keeping safe oral health practices. This awesome event saw over 20 families participate with their little ones at the Village Connect hub and had some families going the extra mile to make appointments to visit the Oral Health clinic in Kingston.

DESMOND Program update
In February 2022, Gaylene Ahipene was appointed as our 2nd Pasifika and Maori community educator. Gaylene’s role will co-facilitate the Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed (DESMOND) community sessions in partnership with Diabetes QLD. This session is a free and open to all community members with type 2 diabetes and their families. For more information or upcoming sessions please email: maori_pasifika@diabetesqld.org.au

Child Health Champions
The Child Health Pathways project was implemented in September 2021 to support families to navigate and access health and early intervention services for their young children. The program is managed by The Salvation Army and has a team of coordinators based in community organisations. A part-time program coordinator is based in Village Connect and offers practical support, advocacy, information and coordination of support services.
