Community Workshop – Strategy 

As part of our work to ensure our community members and leaders are actively involved in the implementation of the Health Strategy, we have continued to deliver Community Workshops. Since the last update, we have held a further two more sessions on the 10th of September 2022 and the 4th of March 2023. These workshops are fundamental for us to be able to connect our communities to the work of the Health Strategy and to have our Communities be actively involved in the journey. These workshops will now be held every quarter across the lifespan of the Health Strategy.

Objective: 1.6

  • Increase community leaders’ capability and opportunity to drive strategy planning and service delivery for the Pasifika and Māori community 
  • Provide network forums and workshops for innovators to create, coordinate and implement innovative ideas.

Health Strategy Website Launch

On the 3rd of February 2023, we launched the Pasifika and Māori Health Strategy Website. The website is designed to be the online ‘home’ of the Strategy. A collaborative place where you can easily find and can read all things ‘Pasifika and Māori Health Strategy’, including Strategy updates, data and reports, view culturally appropriate health resources, and locate community services via our interactive online directory.

  • Investigate technology as a means for empowering community members to prevent and self-
    manage chronic conditions.

Waitangi Day

A number of Pasifika and Māori Health and Wellbeing Strategy governance group members attended the Waitangi at Twilight event on the 3rd of February. The Governance Group were proud to be able to support with sponsorship of the event and sponsorship of the Ukutangi traditional clay wind instrument (round flute) workshop delivered by Governance Group member Andre Ahipene and wife Gaylene from AUAHA. Culture, diversity and community are important aspects of the Health Strategy. We also had a representative from Head to Health to promote their new mental health service in the Brisbane south region, and we were able to speak to our local MPs and councillors about the Health Strategy too. Thank you to Te Korowai Aroha and members of the Māori community for letting us be part of this day and giving us an opportunity to support our community through promoting the Health Strategy and other supporting programs.

Inclusive Practice – Quality Improvement Workshops

Brisbane South PHN have been working with our commissioned mental health services to become more culturally responsive to improve safe care that provides choice and control for people accessing their services which includes our multicultural and Pasifika and Māori communities. Three workshops were held in February.

Objective: 1.5, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4

Related Action from Strategy:

  • Build capacity of mainstream service providers to deliver culturally responsive services through multi-faceted training and support programs
  • Continue and expand on training for organisations and services to adopt a strengths-based and assets approach to engaging with Pasifika and Māori peoples.
  • Continue partnerships with local community organisations to deliver mental health programs
  • Continue and expand on culturally-responsive training and support for health professionals,
    services and organisations

Free Interpreting – All commissioned Mental Health Providers

As of Feb 2023, free interpreting services will now be available to all Mental Health service providers commissioned by Brisbane South PHN through the Translating and Interpreting Services (TIS National). Interpreting services help to ensure safe, quality mental health services are being delivered within our community. Access to credentialed interpreters that speak in a range of Pacific languages are also available through this program.

Working with Pasifika People’s Course

Brisbane South PHN has partnered with MANA Pasifika to deliver free online courses/workshops for community professionals/practitioners who work with Pasifika peoples and communities. On the 17th of February and 29th of March 2023, Governance Group member, Eden Malama, was invited as a panel member to provide an update on the Health Strategy and insights into how the Health Strategy draws on Pasifika and Māori models of wellbeing for effective community engagement.

    assets approach to engaging with Pasifika and Māori peoples.

Healthy Hearing Clinics

Metro South Health has partnered with Village Connect to deliver healthy hearing clinics one day a fortnight at the Village Connect Hub. There has been a total of 92 babies who have had healthy hearing checks since August 2022. This is a fantastic outcome given the wait list of over 200 mums waiting to have their babies’ hearing tested.

  • Continue and expand on programs for children and young people that enable them to live healthy lives.
  • Develop cross-sector partnerships to deliver place-based services across the continuum of health and social need
  • Enhance joint planning and service delivery through formalised partnerships between relevant stakeholders

Pathways in Place and Village Connect Collaboration

Pathways in Place will be supporting a funded role for an identified community researcher to be based at Village Connect (3 days a week). They will be focussing on documenting the Village Connect journey, including service model and pathways, challenges faced and overcome, and the lessons learnt along the way. Congratulations on an awesome collaboration.

Queensland Pasifika and Māori Network Forum (QPMN Forum)  

On the 11th of May 2023, Governance Group member, Eden Malama, was able to present the Strategy and provide an update at the QPMN forum. The Strategy was well received by attendees of the meeting and many connections were made.

Multicultural Health Symposium 2023

The Metro South Health, Health Equity and Access Team hosted the highly anticipated 2nd Multicultural Health Symposium: A Culture of Care on 25th and 26th May 2023. Over 230 delegates from multiple Hospital and Health Services, communities and organisations congregated to listen, learn, and share their knowledge of multicultural health. A range of Pasifika and Māori specific initiatives were also presented. A special Malo 'aupito (Thank you) to Governance Group member Dr Inez Fainga'a-Manu Sione who successfully collaborated on MCing such a great and powerful event. From the Symposium, participants have increased their knowledge, learnt new valuable insights, and are inspired to continue advancing multicultural health in our communities.

Nesian Point – Mild to Moderate Psychological Therapies

Brisbane South PHN have Commissioned Nesian Point to deliver a project for young people at Brisbane Youth Detention Centre, Marsden State High School and Woodridge State High School that will support the following:

  • Promote understanding of holistic Pasifika and Māori models of health and the implications of these for Pasifika and Māori youth mental health services, and services more generally.
  • Promote community dialogue about mental health and wellbeing in Pasifika and Māori young people, with attention to reducing stigma and removing cultural taboos.
  • Promote social inclusion of young people from Pasifika and Māori backgrounds.
  • Research and investigate innovative solutions for the advancement of Pasifika and Māori communities, targeting holistic health and wellbeing and mental wealth/health.
  • Investigate opportunities for technology to positively impact on Pasifika holistic health and wellbeing.
