Pasifika and Māori Community Based Suicide Prevention – Market Briefing

On the 12th of January, a market briefing was held at the Brisbane South PHN office to support community organisations interested in tendering for the Pasifika and Māori community-based suicide prevention tender to respond. The workshop provided information on commissioning and different commissioning approaches, procurement processes and tender specifics.

Many Pasifika and Māori organisations and representatives attended, making it the highest-attended market briefing the Brisbane South PHN has ever held.

Side By Side Consortium

Congratulations to the Side by Side Consortium, who were the successful candidates for the Pasifika and Māori community-based suicide prevention open tender.

The Side by Side project will see five community organisations partner to deliver activities that enhance the community’s mental wealth across five key pillars: Faith, Family, Fun, Fitness, and Future. The aim is to raise awareness, educate, and activate the Pasifika and Māori community around mental wealth through multiple campaigns and face to face to activities targeting different age groups.

The consortium is made up of the following organisations:

·         Village Connect (Lead agency)

·         Reap Fitness

·         CrossFit COAH

·         Teti’s Club

·         Maximise Psychology

We look forward to seeing the developments of the SBS project and the impacts it will have to support our communities further with increasing their mental health and wellbeing.

Pasifika and Māori Health Liaison Officer Role – Metro South Health

Metro South Health is pleased to announce the creation of the Pasifika and Māori Health Liaison Officer role, a significant step towards enhancing culturally appropriate support within their hospitals. This newly identified role acknowledges the unique health needs of Pasifika and Māori communities and is a testament to committing to provide inclusive and culturally sensitive healthcare.

The recruitment process for the Pasifika and Māori Health Liaison Officer position is currently being finalised and will be communicated in due time.

  • Develop service models that provide “wrap around” services delivered by a team that includes identified health positions such as nurse navigator, multicultural health worker, hospital liaison

Pasifika and Māori Health Strategy Business Case

We are excited to be working with creative agency- New Word Order, who is assisting the Pasifika and Māori Health and Wellbeing Strategy governance group in crafting a business case tailored for investors. This initiative strategically targets capital raising among investors, policymakers, philanthropic organisations, and other sector partners. Our aim is to secure long-term investments in Pasifika and Māori health and wellbeing within the Brisbane south region, guided by the Pasifika and Māori Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

Strategy Evaluation Co-design Workshop

On the 17th of May, the Pasifika and Māori Health and Wellbeing Strategy governance group participated in an evaluation co-design and planning workshop. The workshop was led by Dr Tagaloa Glenda Stanley and team who will be leading a full evaluation assessing the impacts of the Pasifika and Māori Health and Wellbeing Strategy designed to improve the overall wellbeing and health outcomes of Pasifika and Māori in the Brisbane south region.

Oceania Pacific Health Association (OPHA)– Health Literacy Roadshow project

OPHA have been delivering health information sessions at various locations to Pasifika and Māori communities. The aim of the project is to support the dissemination of findings from the QLD Health CALD Health Data Report and explore ways to increase health literacy and promotion activities within the community. This project has been a great way for community to connect in and have some rich discussions about health with a team of Pasifika health professionals. The project has received lots of great feedback about the need to keep our communities and community leaders informed and actively involved in the discussions.

Tasi Ia Keriso (TIK) Unlimited Conference

On the 24th of February, we had the opportunity to present the work of the Pasifika and Māori Health and Wellbeing Strategy at the Tasi Ia Keriso Unlimited conference. The successful event, held at Griffith University in Meadowbrook, brought together over 300 young people and their families. This significant gathering focused on key areas such as mental wealth, foster and kinship care, education, citizenship, healthy and strong relationships, and post-school pathways.

The conference provided a dynamic platform for attendees to engage in meaningful discussions and workshops. Key speakers from various fields shared their insights, helping to foster a deeper understanding of the importance of mental health and wellbeing among young people, cultural protocols, and pursuing business and academia were just some of the topics covered. Interactive sessions highlighted the value of educational pursuits and informed participants about diverse post-school opportunities, encouraging them to explore different career paths and further education.

Waitangi Day

Members of the Pasifika and Māori Health and Wellbeing Strategy governance group attended the Waitangi at Twilight event on the 2nd of February. Members of the governance group were proud to sponsor and support this event. We received lots of great feedback and saw that our resources were a big hit with the community.

We extend our gratitude to Te Korowai Aroha and members of the Māori community for allowing us to be part of this day and providing us with the opportunity to promote our Strategy and other supporting health programs, thereby supporting our community.
